The three-day “Train the Trainers” intensive workshop which took place within the framework of INGENIOUS project was successfully concluded last week. The Laboratory of Knowledge and Intelligent Computing (KIC) of the Department of Informatics and Telecommunications of the University of Ioannina organized and hosted the event, in the premises of the University in Arta, Greece, with the physical or virtual participation of representatives of six partners from Italy, Bulgaria, Latvia and Slovenia.
In particular, the workshop took place from Monday, November 7, 2022 to Wednesday, November 9, 2022 in the lecture hall of the Library on the Arta Campus. Many distinguished academics and researchers accepted the invitation of KIC to present issues related to the use of digital technologies in education, as well as the implementation of the green and circular economy model.
During the first day, the session of presentations was opened by Dr. Athanasios Christopoulos, who presented the new trends in the field of education using machine learning models. Prof. Vangelis Papadakis followed, presenting the application of circular economy, as implemented in the CIRCLab of Western Greece. The first day ended with Mr. Nick Emery representative of the Italian “Sistemi Formativi Confindustria” who presented ways of integrating Virtual and Augmented Reality technologies into the educational practice.
During the second day, Prof. Nikolaos Korres demonstrated ways through which Precision Agriculture serves the idea of sustainable agricultural production. Afterwards, Prof. Christakis Paraskeva took the floor and presented cases of beneficial reuse – after treatment – of various agricultural wastes. Ms. Vida Perko, representative of the “Styrian Tecnnology Park” from Slovenia presented practical cases of the application of the digital educational platform Moodle in the teaching practice of her organization, as well as the possibilities offered by this digital tool. Afterwards, Ms. Mary Styliou from KIC carried out a detailed demonstration of the educational platform implemented as part of the project. The series of speeches on the second day was closed by Prof. Vasia Liagou who spoke about the need to safeguard the privacy of users of an educational platform, as well as their protection from cyber-attacks.
The first presentation of the third and last day of the workshop was by Dr. Stelios Mystakidis regarding applications of Metaverse in educational practice. Continuing, Mr. Dimitris Salmas, partner of KIC, eloquently presented the concept of Micro-learning as a new trend in education, promoted at the European level. Prof. Paraskevi Beza presented in detail the wide range of applications of digital technologies in the agricultural sector, offering a multitude of smart solutions.
The three-day workshop closed with a discussion among the participants about the perspectives that are opening up, but also the challenges that remain to be addressed.
During the three-day workshop, a visit was made to the premises of KIC in the Campus of Arta, and specifically to the Virtual and Augmented Reality Laboratory, where the guests had the opportunity to test implemented scenarios for the use of virtual reality in education & training.
